I'd love illustrations too! ;) The problem is that the books are very large, so adding in incidental art panels would increase the size. It also makes the layout a little more tricky for the typesetter - but that wouldn't be my problem! If it is a possibility then I'll certainly go for it!

@Lonewolf Don't worry, you can team up your own heroes!

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

I was thinking this the other day (about full page illustrations.) That would really be cool. I used to love the artwork in the old fighting fantasy books. I suppose they were there becasue there was less description but I'd still think it would be good to have images of some of the monsters and encounters. The artwork for the maps and puzzles is awesome. More of that please!!

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

Just to rekindle the thread a little...

Given the success of the first book, I was wondering whether there is any chance of full page illustrations appearing in the second book? Would love to see some of the encounters or characters shown in visual form (even if that increases the price slightly).

I see DQ2 will have co-op battles - for those of us without a real life co-op buddy, it would be great if your old character could emerge from retirement to help you out!!!

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

I can't reveal the title yet. ;)

The book will be out next year. I can't really be specific as to when - but I'm guessing around late summer. There will be lots of website updates and extra content before then, so don't worry!

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

Balancing would become a mess- i agree. I'd never read fan written material anyway even if it was well done. I don't think the story needs it or would benefit from anything more. there is four generals to look forward to so I am content with that and replaying what I've already got

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

Off course i would love to get more DQ adventures, leg. monsters and so on to read. But as the balancing of the game can very easily become really bad i will only use official "add ons". Therefore i think your (Da Boss) idea is great!
The only "problem" is that i prefer to have a book with all the content instead of having a book and hundreds of A4 sheets with additional adventures. --> thats the reason why i even buy all the ols expensive books (like bloodsword, late lw and so on) instead of printing the pdf.

Therefore i would really apreciate if in some month or whatever some kind of collectors edition with all additional content would come out - in this case i would buy the book a second time. The only question is if such a "second release" would be bought enough to finance the production cost.

Anyway i would apreciate to get more OFFICIAL content in any way!

best regards Bernd

PS: Sorry for my bad english

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

@ Legion
Concerning new/old abilities, I think it will be about 50/50. I'll have a better idea once I've written it! ;)

@ RobinSure
Hmm, that is a question I have sort of being dreading. The problem with people writing their own DQ materials is that a wave of new 'non-canon' items will be introduced into the mix. Whereas some people will be responsible with this, others might abuse the chance to create the 'perfect uber weapon' for their hero. This also raises issues with hero builds and balancing (and possibly pvp battles, if people go down that route). If some heroes are choosing to equip themselves with their own or someone else's creations then things get messy.

I see the benefits and I see the drawbacks of fan-made content - certainly if it is unregulated. One solution to this (and it is one I have been thinking about lately) is to run a couple of competitions for a new act 2 quest and a new act 3 legendary monster. The winning entries would then be featured on the downloads page as 'official' DQ fan-made products. At least, in this way, fans feel like they can contribute to the site. (Winners would also get a full set of loot cards!)

I'd be interested to hear other opinions on this!

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

Well, legendary monsters are something that should be relatively easy to do, as they don't involve too much context, just balanced stats. And they could be added to the website. I'm actually curious about the idea of community developed content. Someone has made a fan extension for the book already, and there's not really anything to stop people making up monsters of their own to fight.

The question is, do we need to be careful in terms of copyright? Given that the book is self-published, there'll be no big publisher problem, but would da boss mind?

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, each DQ book is a one off story, but they do build on each other to some extent, with characters re-appearing and plot threads carrying over to future books. You would benefit from reading them in order rather than cherry-picking. (Although, I doubt I could ever produce enough books to cherry pick from anyway!)

There are obvious problems with a persistent hero. At the end of Legion of Shadow, your hero is quite powerful. To have carried them over into a whole new book would mean that, from the start, you would have foes that have 100+ health at least - and by the end of the book, to allow for progression, you would be facing opponents with health of 600 or more. I know it is all relative, but I didn't want the numbers to get too crazy. I also wanted to avoid, at all costs, doing something lame like removing abilities or items from a hero at the start, to de-power them. That would infuriate a lot of people!

I wouldn't worry too much about the persistent hero thing... as there will be elements of that in the books (no hero will be in retirement, put it that way).

My goal and challenge is to make the central hero in each book as interesting and challenging to play as the last. Hopefully, I'll pull that off!

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

Hello everybody,

I'm new to the forums, and have just ordered the book via Amazon. Would have got the Special Edition, but no shipping to the US.

As per the topic, I'm a big fan of the Lonewolf Books, mainly because of persistent character throughout the series. I love how the story just continues to evolve into an epic.

Now as I just ordered DQ, I haven't read/played through, so don't know how this would work in anyway, just stating my opinion.

With the Fighting Fantasy series, because they are one-off stories, I'm less inclined to buy ALL of them, and just cherry pick.

I'm a big fan of this genre and will support Mike in his endeavors to publish more books, persistent character/story or not.

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

I don't want to go into too many details re: DQ2 this far ahead of its publication (but I'm obviously open to suggestions and speculation!).

I can, however, confirm that there will be 15 careers (5 rogue, 5 mage and 5 warrior). There may even be a 6th career choice for mages, but that is still being worked on.

As for your ideas... the simple answer is 'yes' to all of them, to some degree. You will have a fresh hero in DQ2. But... <snip> ah sorry, that information is classified for now ;)

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

In DQ1 you'll have a very tough time if you do the quests in an order Michael didn't anticipate. In that case you will not have certain items when they are needed, and you will have them (taking up valuable backpack space) when you don't need them anymore.

In DQ2 it would be nice if doing the quests from easy to hard would also mean that you at least have the chance of collecting the right stuff.

One of the things that would be nice is owning a storage space somewhere. In Fabled Lands you can own a house and store items there. Note that this is not a 100% safe place: dice will determine at every visit if your stuff has been stolen.

I think I'd vote for fresh characters, and have different classes and careers. Or as LoneWolf said at least have a few new ones.

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply

I see this book is now in the formative stages.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or ideas they would like to see in that book?

I'm very curious as to whether Michael will allow characters to transfer across or require the to start afresh in bk2. I'd be tempted to do a half-way system and possibly have some kind of "heirloom" item option, with a few select items from your previous character donated to your new character in book 2.

I'd also really like to see some way to increase bag space, possibly with a way to carry 1 or 2 spare items.

Other things that could be interesting would be some kind of co-op system and a new class (perhaps a priest, druid or shaman type character).

Any thoughts?

Posted to: DQ 2 Show Thread | Post Reply
