Personally, I will give a combat three tries. And if I'm close, or I see a reasonable statistical win, I'll take it. If I'm really stuck, and it's a main quest, I'll accept the fail, record the loss, pass on any rewards, and continue the story.

Last bit of advice for anyone reading. Load up on speed. Combat is win-lose, so if you have a high speed, you'll win more, and get more chance to damage. In my experience, it's unlikely that you'll end up with too much speed, and not enough magic/brawn to punch through armor. And it's nice to have some passives going that wear-down an enemy. This advice may be outdated, as I've only played book 1 & 2, and there's been some balancing in the later books.

I agree to, and I do imagine the fights, why wouldn't I play a book like this I didn't? What I'm saying is there is just to much rolling... to bad the system, got rid of the enemy's die, and have fewer rolls... ie. roling for initiate, twice, then damage, that's alot of rolling... I don't mind rolling, but the system isn't the greatest... infact I love rolling I play d100 and 4AD.. but I do find the rolling in D100 tedious too, 4AD is more streamlined... but ya, it's the rolling and rolling and rolling if it's like the last few quests, sometimes I have to do them 3 or 4 times... to tedious.

Agreed thats the heart of all gaming is the gameplay. I love all the books and can't wait for the next one.

Well I like to imagine the fights in my head like I would with any rpg. If you see it as just rolling dice I see its gonna be boring. The abilities are descriptive enough to imagine you firing off spells, dodging attacks, putting up a shield, drinking a potion..... Some of my best gaming moments came from book two with the legendary fights. Literally going down to the wire with 2 health and winning. Love it!

Sorry guys i'm DONE. All 4 books in the garbage. I tired and tired of rolling and rolling and rolling and rolling, so boring so so so boring... acn't even get out of the first act now... I'm done... terrible book, can't say about the others, but I have so little time to deal with such tedious rolling boredom when I have better books to read and games to play.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. Go play diablo, or some other game. Just to much tedious rolling and such a boring system of combat, that there''s no excitement to my rolls..Bye

yeah I had no problems with the other books at all. They played a lot smoother than the first. Still died plenty of times though!

From Book 2 onwards I took a very different approach to speed and the way itemisation works. The speed of items is 'drip fed' in a more formal way so that the speed of items stays consistent for each stage of the book. Therefore, it is very hard to fall behind in speed and find yourself struggling.

Book 1 was obviously the first one I wrote and a bit of an experiment - that was successful in some areas, but in others probably a fell a bit short. However, like I said, you can use the Italian edition list of changes to 'amend' your book with the balance changes.

These are largely quality of life improvements to make some items stronger, have more useful stats, and reduces the difficulty of some fights.

I played rogue in the first book on the recommendations on this forum and it plays easier because I think the gear choices are better. I'll confess I went rogue in HoF and really enjoyed it then replayed with warrior. Mage for WF and RoDS. I loved the new game mechanics in RoDS for mages.

Best advice is always pick items with speed! That's how you "level up".

Going back and re-reading really isn't that bad, I was able to get into character - and now I have some knowledge on what I'm focusing on stat wise.

Just one more thing - in the other books, do you have to go rouge speed route?

Dont sweat it monogee lol. I played mage and died a million times. I gave up and played heart of fire. Learned so much about the game so I went back and obliterated everything in legion of shadows because I knew more about what I was doing (SPEEED!). I know how you feeling but you can do it. I just finished book 4 and it was a totally awesome experience. So don't give up.

OKay trying to remember. First act get lightning and thorns that gives insane passive damage. And just keep up damage and speed as rogue. When you see a +speed item take it. Piercing is essential, think you get that from undead in tombs. Grab assassin career in act 2 once you can defeat the guy and that gives you extra venom. This is * at end of Act 2 so be prepared that some are immune to venom. but your speed should win. Then Act 3 for rogue its just win really. You can't lose. Passives and assassin career is the way.

Well what do you suggest? Speed, is the key, but can you give me a mini-guide of things not to do and what to do, or key skills to look for? I'll give it another read tomorrow.

Ever heard the term "get gud". Ha ha. Sorry but i played games and stunk at them then I come back stronger and with better knowledge. You learn the better abilities and items as you come back to a game. You got to the end of Act 2 on a first run. =Thats good for this book in fact bloody amazing. Like the author says this is a tougher book than all the others so don't judge yourself.

But I will agree with playing book 2 and 3 because they are so easier and better.

That is the the route I went pickpocket, I tried to focus on speed? So your telling me I need go back and read 10 hours worth of gameplay again? I think I best just drop these books off at goodwill. If the author can't balance the very first book, and has loop holes where new players can mess up this bad... yup off to goodwill they good or value village. again I went rogue! then pickpocket!!!!

I'm darn frustrated... and this book story was so interesting to be enjoyed. If I want perma death, I'll go play fabled lands any day and re-read, cause it feels like I'm really the character- destiny quest has a great story, but the book is not good enought for me to warrent ten hours of my time to fix my character, I'd rather spend 10 hours on another game. My time is valuable. Or if I was into computer games I'd play diablo... where you can fix your mistakes...

Warrior is worst no! Rogue is best but go pickpocket then assassin career (with the legendary boss in act2). Focus on speed and nothing else. You will win easy.

Pickpocket is a terrible career choice unless you know the book and what abilities to keep. Looks like you went for charm and thats a bad choice. Heal for a rogue is bad too so not sure what item is giving that. You should have gone down the poison route with assassin or witchfinder if you could get it. Without venom or passives you are gonna struggle with that path. Can only think you traded good skills with pickpocket.

Any consolation is that i played warrior and then started over as another character. I knew more about what I was doing. Speed is the only thing you need to keep up.

I'd really like to finish the book, but like I said I'm going to shelve the series, I'm stuck at the final boss, Act 2... I don't want to reread 10 hours I already put into the book.

And I admit, two of the boss monsters in this act I could not beat, so I cheated, hoping to get gear, but nadda... so ya I'm going to cheat anymore. I believe one was the hydra where if you don't kill it after three turns, it regenerates back to full health... was one I cheat on, the other I can't remember, was frustrated, I hit this block at the time was going to throw the book in the trash bin And was yay this is great got all 4 books, hopefull there will be a 5th, now that's changed, I really don't care if I read the others or a 5th... to much mundane rolling, trying to beat the same monster over and over.

Sadly I find d100 or four against darkness more satisfying sorry just my thought a newbie... I wanted to play this for the story, and four against darkness for the rolling.. And the rolling in four against darkness is much more interesting. Not putting down the book, just saying for someone new to this type of book, it's very unforgiving and I don't recommend it to new people to the genre, one mistake, picking the wrong gear, seems to vital and more important to the book the the story. It's sad the author wrote such beautiful words, only to be hindered by poor gear choices.

Hi Momo. Really sorry to hear you have hit a wall with LoS. Sadly, you are not the first. The first book is a really tough introduction to the series, and I have been constantly on at my publisher to make some tweaks to balance (which I was able to do for the Italian edition). You can see all those changes in the forum threads.

I can assure you, the other books in the series are nothing like the first in terms of difficulty. They also have a much greater emphasis on story, your choices, and consequences. So I would definitely urge you to at least try Heart of Fire. You will be blown away by the difference.

Back to Legion. Have you been able to do the arena quests? They often get forgotten and they might give you some progression of gear. What path are you playing? A three speed difference does seem a lot.

There are also the additional Tavern Tinker rewards (see the downloads section of this site) - perhaps the cloak or chest item will boost your speed (even if the other stat is not ideal).

Take a look at the changes made for the Italian edition. You might be equipped with an item that I have boosted in some way. Always worth a try.

I give up, my character is like 3 speed behind the boss in ACT 2, book, 1, I'm tired of rolling, and rolling trying to lucky beat him. SO I don't know what to do? I'm going back to reread most of the contents again... so I'm going to probably shelves the books, sadly I own all 4 and probably won't see me reading again... anyone else get into this situation? it's just to hard - I want to read, and love the story, just taking 2 hours to try to beat the boss, is not what i call fun... ty
