So, I just had one of those "I'm an idiot" realizations. I've been working on a way for people to add the data to my system, and trying to make it as easy as possible. And I had this thought that it would be nice if I could have it in a spreadsheet as well, same thing Ravenous mentioned earlier. If only there was a way for people do do that all at the same time...

*smack*

So, I'm now working on setting up a Google Doc Spreadsheet that will be shared publicly for people to add data. There will be different sheets for different things: Abilities (Player and Enemy), Enemies, Items, Careers, etc. I'm also going to try and future-proof it by including which book it is found in.

That will let me focus on the real app, other than figuring out how to format all that data into something I can use... Makes it easier on one side, harder on the other. Go figure.

I'll post a link once I've got it up and running for all of you. Might be tonight or tomorrow.

I got to work a little over vacation, not as much as I hoped. Without internet, looking things up proves difficult I'm making some small progress tonight, though. It's close to a point where I can have people start adding some initial data. Still some tweaking and such to do, though.

Darksorrow, that's an interesting idea. I'm not very technical when it comes to 'web things' so not sure how difficult/easy it would be to integrate with the existing site, but I'm sure this is something we could look at once the database is up and running - even if it works as a separate 'external upload site' which can be linked to from this one.

Da Boss has not asked that of me at all. I asked him to make sure I wasn't running into any problems doing this sort of project. Otherwise, that hasn't been discussed.

That being said, I do want a way to export a nice looking character sheet with stats, and such.

Cool. is this replacing the upload a hero section on the website? This system would save a heap a time putting hero builds up without typing them all out

Hmmm... No it isn't. I noticed that yesterday after my update, and fixed it. I must have forgotten to upload the change I made.

I uploaded the corrected files, and it looks like it works. You might need to force the browser to refresh (Ctrl + F5 on Windows) the page to make sure everything works.

Wow cool idea! This'll be great when its done, but I could not get the numbers to update when I added items but I suppose you all ready knew that!

Ok, I took some time over lunch to make it look a bit better. It's looking a lot more functional, although the area that opens when you click on things still looks ugly. Now it looks somewhat like the real character sheet.

You think that one's ugly, my admin page is a mishmash of stuff that looks good and things that aren't displaying properly and things that aren't styled at all and look blah

At least that is uniformly ugly.

This looks good Rithe. Like you say, ugly as hell (hehe) but the functionality is there. Once you have it up and running I'll be happy to add data to it for the DQ1 items.

I'm going on vacation in a few days, and wanted to give at least a small taste of what's to come. I'm hoping to work on this some more during vacation, although it will probably be more on the adding items and such to the database side of things.

A few notes. As stated, this is a development version, so things don't look pretty at all. I'm going for functionality right now. Click on an item you want to change, and an area will appear towards the bottom of your screen. Select the item you want.

You will notice that the items are mainly the Collector's Cards, plus a few others. And, for the majority, the Ability descriptions are not existent. This is because there is very little to the database right now.
Hopefully in the next version, there will be a way for people to help update the database. This will include: Paths, Careers, Items, Abilities, Quests and Enemies.

As I said, this is a development version. Not Beta, or even Alpha quality. That is where most developers bring people in to see. I just want to give all of you a small taste.

Just to update people. I have a system that the different slots are changeable, although I only have a few items to work with right now. Right now, I'm working on getting a way to search for items in the item list. After that is working, I'll get it set so you can select an item by a slot, or search by name.

As I said, I don't have many items to work with yet. I might call on the rest of the community to help me with that later. Probably set something up to allow people to add items.

After that, I'll probably set up the quest side of things. Right now I want to get the items working first. Oh, and abilities. I've got a few of those as well.

It's going pretty good, overall. I'm hoping to have something to show you guys in the next few weeks.

I'm hoping that it will be able to select items by Act and slot. Not sure about path, though. That would require mapping the quests out, and I don't know that I want to spend the time doing that.

I'll release this under a license that will allow people to edit and expand upon the system. I don't want to presume that I'll have the time and ability in the future to add to this. I hope I do, but I know the way life goes.

I think this is a great idea Rithe. I would find it useful if I could filter items by act, type and by path. Maybe that would be too much hassle for you but I think item location would be useful. eg I could select Act 1 and left hand items. or all cloak items.

Yeh, I think that would be fun as well.

And I agree, the hardest part is going to be entering all that data. I'm trying to think if there is any easier way, or not.

What might happen, is that I just make a file with all the items, and one with all the abilities. As things are added, they can be added as need be. And if others want to use the data, they can. Sort of a main repository of data that everyone can use.

I was thinking something similar, but just making a spreadsheet or something to share with all the item stats. Then I realised how long it might take me I think an automatic sheet like this would be good for trying out builds too.

DQ Armory / Char Sheet

I had an idea last night for a sort of automatic character sheet. If any of you are like me, you update your equipment, but sometimes forget something (usually abilities for me). I want to assist in that.

What I'm thinking is a web app where you can select your equipment, which displays all relevant character data resulting from that. What you're doing now, but automatic.

I'm in the beginning stages of this, and this is going to be more of a fun side project when I don't want to work on some of my other things. In other words, this could take a while. Is there interest in a project like this? I can see possibilities extending from this, but that is for the future.

And yes, I checked with Da Boss, and he's okay-ed this.
